Karuizawa 40 Years Old 1982 - Platinum Geisha Sherry Cask No.1650

An astounding 40-year-old Sherry Cask matured Japanese Single Malt whisky from the closed Karuizawa distillery. This single-cask Karuizawa is the oldest bottling in the final release of the iconic Geisha series, called the Platinum Geishas. Platinum has been chosen to represent this whisky as it is one of the rarest precious metals and synonymous with purity and strength.

Karuizawa Distillery was established in 1955 in the foothills of Mount Asama, an active volcano. The area is a popular mountain resort to the north-west of Tokyo and the distillery is the highest in Japan at 850 meters above sea level.
The environment is ideal for whisky production, enjoying low temperatures and high humidity. Production of single malt whisky at the distillery ceased in 2000.

Only 227 bottles of this Karuizawa were produced, all from cask number 1650 which was filled with spirit distilled in 1982. The Geisha shown on the labels of both Platinum bottlles pay homage to the Onna-bugeisha, an impressive group of female Samurai.
