Scotch Whisky: Its Past & Present by David Daiches is a classic exploration of Scotland’s national drink, combining historical scholarship with an appreciation of whisky’s cultural significance. First published in 1969 as one of the first guides on the subject, the book traces the development of Scotch whisky from its early origins and the era of illicit distilling through the growth of commercial distilleries, the introduction of the patent still, and the rise of major blending companies. Daiches examines the social, economic, and technological forces that shaped the Scotch whisky industry while also discussing regional styles, production methods, maturation, and tasting characteristics. Written by the distinguished Scottish historian and critic David Daiches, the book offers both an authoritative history and an engaging guide to understanding the traditions, craftsmanship, and enduring appeal of Scotch whisky.
