    This is an incredibly sought after, extremely old whisky from the sadly closed Karuizawa distillery in Japan. Aged for over 48 years, this was the oldest expression from the defunct distillery at the time of release. The whisky itself was aged for this extremely long period of maturation in a single Sherry Oak cask and lay undisturbed in a traditional dunnage warehouse at Karuizawa before being bottled at Chichibu Distillery.

    Bottled from a single 400-litre cask (number 3603), naturally the angels have had their fair share, leaving just enough of the precious liquid to make 143 bottles of this revered Whisky.

    Originally presented to clients of Wealth Solutions, a respected alternative investment firm based in Poland. The Polish link continues, with the bottle being presented in a stunning box partly made from Polish black fossil oak.

    Bottled at natural cask strength and without colour or chill filtration. This Lot comes complete with book written by Dave Broom and features tasting notes from some of the World's most respected whisky writers, all of which agree this is a simply incredible, unique whisky.

    Karuizawa

    The most collectable name in Japanese whisky, began life as a vineyard, beneath Mount Asama, which was an active volcano. Before the then owners, Daikoku-budoshu, decided to enter the world of whisky in 1955. A brave move given the domestic market was still relatively small and whisky was seen as being of Scottish origin. They looked to Scotland and created a modest-sized distillery that brought together the best of whisky. The emphasis was on quality, using the flavoursome Golden Promise barley that is rarely used today, stills that enhanced the distillate and then predominately sherry maturation, thanks to casks sourced from Spain. A lull in whisky demand prompted the distillery to be closed in 2000, if Japanese whisky was booming as it has been in recent times, Karuizawa would still be in existence. Instead, the remaining casks were purchased by Ichiro Akuto and over the years we’ve seen these hugely collectable releases arrive at retail and vanish soon after.
