The History of The Macallan Distillery

The Macallan Distillery has a long and fascinating history. The distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer, and John Grant, a businessman, in the Speyside region of Scotland. The distillery began producing whisky in 1826, and was one of the first distilleries to produce a single malt whisky. The whisky was originally made with barley malt and spring water from the River Spey, which gave it its distinctive flavor.

Throughout the 19th century, the Macallan Distillery went through several changes of ownership, but it was always known for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. In the 1930s, the distillery began aging its whisky in sherry-seasoned oak casks, which gave the whisky its distinctive flavor and aroma.

Macallan at Whisky Auctions

Macallan whisky has long been sought after by connoisseurs and collectors alike, and whisky auctions have become increasingly popular in recent years. The boom in whisky has, to a large extent been led by whiskies from The Macallan Distillery. They have released a plethora of whiskies over the years, which have become highly sought-after by collectors. These whiskies can be aged (10 year old, 12, 18, 25 & 30 year old) or can be released without an age statement (often referred to as NAS – No Age Statement).

The Macallan Distillery has also released a number of special editions, such as The Archival, Folio series and the 1824 range. These whiskies are incredibly sought-after and can fetch extremely high prices at auctions. The often-spectacular rise in prices from retail, to auction prices, has sadly contributed to price increases at retail. Having said all that, it needn’t cost the earth to start buying, enjoying or even investing in Macallan whisky. There are several sub £100 bottles (Macallan A Night On Earth in Scotland) you can get a hold of (at the time of writing), and can climb right up to tens of thousands of pounds.
