This print is of one of a 'Lost Distillery' - Towiemore Distillery, which closed and was demolished in 1931. Built by Peter Dawson, the Distillery was in Speyside just 7 miles from what would become the famous whisky town of Dufftown. He head-hunted a crack team from Macallan’s best distillery workers and built a grand distillery beside the railway, all looked bright for his future… But for the unlucky Dawson, he was put out of business in 1931 by water contamination in his water source from a local lime works, which is still there today - part of the local geology. The Alkaline in the water created a harmless fizz in the whisky which faded quickly but it was enough for blenders to get cold feet and he couldn't sell his whisky. Towiemore-Glenlivet refers the Dawson being resident of Glenlivet, that company couldn’t protect its full name assets – you’ll see other whiskies with the Glenlivet name attached. Towiemore-Glenlivet

Towiemore is a lost distillery, founded by Peter Dawson, a distillery that managed to survive the harsh economic conditions of the 1920s only to close in 1931 due to its water becoming contaminated by a nearby mining operation. A similar fate to that of Parkmore, which also resided on the edge of Dufftown. Towiemore was only 7 miles from the Speyside distilling capital at Botriphnie. Featuring twin ventilated pagodas, designed by Charles C. Doig, its malting floor outlived the distillery itself and was utilised by DCL until the 1960s. Most of Towiemore went into blending, a modest output due to only using a pair of stills. But the loss of a reliable water source is something no distillery can overcome and the lime would affect the quality of the water and turn the distillate cloudy automatically.
