Released in October 2024, The Winter Series by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, SMWS is a toast to the spirit of the ceilidh, a tradition that once incorporated not only dancing but also storytelling, poetry and music. SMWS Malt Masters selected four bottlings to be enjoyed in convivial settings over the coming winter months of 2024/2025. Whisky is for sharing – and that’s what the spirit of this series is all about. With a limited number of sets featuring all four bottles released online on 18 October.
Single malts from Caol Ila (Society Cask Number 53), Arran (Society Cask Number 121), Linkwood (Society Cask Number 39) and Speyburn (Society Cask Number 88).
Each bottling features a QR code which gives you access to whisky tales from Tasting Panel chair and ‘Whisky Bard’ Robin Laing. Robin has captured the essence of each of these four whiskies with a series of fireside tales. Expect songs, poems and stories to bring the bottles to life. Raise a glass and embrace the spirit of the ceilidh!

Caol Ila
Islay’s biggest distillery is arguably its most consistent and underappreciated. Caol Ila was established in 1846 and when through a handful of owners thanks to various financial difficulties. The biggest change came in 1972 when the distillery and the majority of buildings were demolished and rebuilt. Famously, stepping into the gap during this period was inaction was the Brora distillery in Sutherland. After further investment in 2011, Caol Ila’s capacity increased to 6.5 million litres as its reputation continued to grow. Widely available in official versions and via independent bottlers, it now forms part of the Johnnie Walker experience with enhanced facilities for visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I bid on the auctions?
You’ll need an account with us to place bids in any auction. Registration takes 60 seconds and there’s a small £5.00 registration fee, payable by credit or debit card. Once paid, you will be registered and can place bids in the auction immediately. The registration fee helps us ensure you’re a real person and a genuine bidder.
Why does the timer extend on a lot?
In the interest of fairness, any bids placed in the final five minutes of a particular lot will extend the end time of that Lot by 15 minutes. We believe in giving our customers a fair amount of time to increase their bid should they wish. Last second sniping isn’t in the spirit of our auctions and by using this system there is no benefit to doing so.
How do I sell?
