Port Dundas

How the mighty can tumble? That’s something you notice in the Scotch whisky industry, as for a period, Port Dundas in Glasgow was Scotland’s biggest distillery. Established in 1811, it was nearby the Forth & Clyde canal for access and by 1877, it was one of the founding members of DCL, which would become the Diageo we know today. The distillery expanded, taking in the neighbouring Dundashill distillery in 1902, increasing its size even further, complete with a chimney that became a local landmark. But time eventually caught up with Port Dundas, which is unfortunate. An ageing site was deemed surplus to Diageo’s grain requirements and instead, the firm invested in its Cameronbridge site. Port Dundas went silent in 2011 and was demolished shortly afterwards. There is plenty of Port Dundas maturing still, Diageo has launched a series of releases and it is strongly supported by the independent sector, making this an affordable closed distillery.
