Pattisons Leith "The Doctor"

Few items genuinely deserve to be called a piece of whisky history — this is one of them. This incredibly rare and well-preserved Victorian stoneware whisky jug was made by Buchan Pottery at Portobello for the Pattisons Brothers of Leith, dating to the 1890s. It was produced to promote "The Doctor" — a blend that had previously been sold under the rather unfortunate name "The Invalid", before being rebranded to suggest that whisky was, in fact, good for your health. The Pattison Brothers were as famous for their flamboyance in marketing their whisky - most memorably distributing 500 parrots trained to cry out their brand name! However, their extravagance masked a far darker story — in 1901 the brothers were jailed for fraud and embezzlement, triggering the so-called Pattison Crash and bringing the Victorian whisky boom to an abrupt end. This jug is a remarkable survivor from one of the most dramatic chapters in Scottish whisky history — and a truly outstanding addition to any collection. Dimensions: 20cm Height x 15cm Diameter
