Mars Tsunuki 5 Years Old

"Mango In The Dojo" This is the very first cask of Tsunuki that the SMWS have ever bottled. Distilled on the 10th of July 2017 at the Mars Tsunuki distillery, Japan and matured in a single 1st fill ex-sherry hogshead for 5 years before being bottled by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, yielding only 277 bottles. Natural cask strength, no clolouring and non chill filtered. Founded by Kiichiro Iwai, Mars Whisky is the whisky-producing subsidiary of Hombo Shuzo, Japan. In 1985 the company opened its first distillery, Shinshu. Iwai is famed for being the man responsible for dispatching Masataka Taketsuru to Scotland, and it is no coincidence that the Shinshu stills are similar to those at Longmorn, also replicated by Taketsuru at his Yoichi distillery. Shinshu was closed in 1992 due to lack of demand, but the fortunes of Japanese whisky soon turned, and Mars Whisky re-opened it again in 2011, and established a second distillery called Tsunuki in 2016. The first Tsunuki single malt was bottled in 2020, and a number of high-quality releases under the Mars Komagatake label have followed.
