An extraordinarily rare Macallan, distilled in 1946 and matured for over half a century exclusively in Sherry Wood casks. This edition of the Masters of Photograph is 56 years of age having been bottled in 2002 before being rebottled once again in 2010 for release. Only 36 bottles containing this single malt were ever released! This particular edition of the Masters of Photography focuses on the work of Albert Watson OBE, a Scottish photographer who is famous for his works that blend art, fashion, and commercial photography, He was born in Edinburgh, raised in Penicuik before emigrating to Los Angeles in 1970 to start his photography career. He is especially well-known for his portrait photos of celebrities, such as Steve Jobs, Alfred Hitcock and Kate Moss. On the front label, you can see one of these photographs, which was taken at Macallan, titled 'Ian Bruce - The Oldest Craftsman, The Macallan Estate'. Each of the 36 bottles that were released featured a different photograph, making this a truly unique bottle. Not only is this the only bottle with this label, but it is the first time this bottle has ever been auctioned.  The lot includes a presentation box, and a full-sized platinum print of the photograph, signed by Ian Bruce and framed in wood by John Jones Art Centre Ltd, London (now closed). Macallan

Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, the Elchies Distillery as it was known initially, did not become the Macallan-Glenlivet in name until 1892. Since then, it has undergone massive expansion with Edrington and William Grant & Sons combining forces in 1999 to purchase Highland Distillers for £601 million. By then, the reputation of the distillery for its sherry-led style of whisky was already firmly in place. The new ownership model has enabled the distillery to produce new ranges, reach out to new demographics and establish itself as an international brand of quality. Bottles are Macallan are increasingly sought after for their commodity value and not the contents, which often are of high quality. Moving to a new distillery site in recent years, will in the long-term, allow Macallan to produce more and if needed, the old distillery sits idle despite being capable of producing 11 million litres before it closed in 2018.
