Bought directly from the Distillery Shop in Sept 2002 and signed by Bob on the premises. Retained in Speyside thereafter by the seller until today. An ultra-rare and truly classic sherried Macallan, this 1981 is regarded as the best of the highly-sought-after Gran Reserva series released in the 1990s to showcase the extreme end of sherried whisky from the distillery. Scoring 91 points on Serge Valentin's whiskyfun.com, this is one of the landmark Macallan releases of the last twenty years.
Selected from the finest Oloroso casks and then bathed in the most sultry of Spanish sherry casks for 18 years. This was then bottled as The Macallan Gran Reserva, the first bottling was in '79 and the last in '82.
Distilled in 1981 at Macallan, this 70cl bottle was matured in sherry wood. Comes presented in a straw-filled wooden presentation box.

Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, the Elchies Distillery as it was known initially, did not become the Macallan-Glenlivet in name until 1892. Since then, it has undergone massive expansion with Edrington and William Grant & Sons combining forces in 1999 to purchase Highland Distillers for £601 million. By then, the reputation of the distillery for its sherry-led style of whisky was already firmly in place. The new ownership model has enabled the distillery to produce new ranges, reach out to new demographics and establish itself as an international brand of quality. Bottles are Macallan are increasingly sought after for their commodity value and not the contents, which often are of high quality. Moving to a new distillery site in recent years, will in the long-term, allow Macallan to produce more and if needed, the old distillery sits idle despite being capable of producing 11 million litres before it closed in 2018.
