Lochindaal 11 Years Old 2009

Lochindaal is a distillate that was produced at Bruichladdich as a homage to a lost Islay distillery of the same name. Today’s recreation is a heavily peated style of malt, around 50ppm in peat terms, which puts it in between Laphroaig and Ardbeg. In Bruichladdich terms, Lochindaal is the lost connection between Port Charlotte and Octomore. The original farm distillery was known for its peaty taste and was established in 1829. Beset by a series of the owners, the distillery limped into the 1920s when the widespread closures prompted by Prohibition, changes in consumer tastes and the impact of the Great Depression, prompted Lochindaal to close its doors in 1929. Thankfully, most of the distillery buildings still exist and have been used for a variety of purposes over the decades including a creamery, youth hostel and mechanic shop. The linkage with Bruichladdich is maintained as the distillery uses some of the old warehousing.
