    Loch Dhu 10 Years Old

    The Black Whisky
    Lot #0270361
    FINISH DATE
    29 February 2016

One of the most infamous and instantly recognisable whiskies ever released, Loch Dhu 10 Year Old — meaning "Black Lake" in Gaelic — gained a cult following for its extraordinarily dark colour and unique character. Distilled at the Mannochmore Distillery and matured in heavily charred oak casks, its near-black appearance sparked curiosity and debate among whisky enthusiasts worldwide. Released in the late 1990s and now discontinued, Loch Dhu offers a distinctive profile with notes of treacle, burnt caramel, dark chocolate, and smoky oak. Its bold and unusual style has divided opinion for decades, but its rarity and distinctive look have made it highly collectible. Whether loved or questioned, Loch Dhu remains a true curiosity in the world of Scotch — a must-have for collectors and those intrigued by whisky’s more unconventional releases.

    Mannochmore

Until the current whisky boom, Mannochmore was the product of the previous boom and a relative newcomer having been founded in 1971. Situated in the bustling Speyside town of Elgin, the distillery is next door to Diageo’s Glenlossie distillery. Much like the distillery building, Mannochmore’s history is rather uneventful and uninspiring. Mothballed in the 1980s, it didn’t make its single malt debut until 1992 when it appeared in the Flora & Fauna series. A handful of limited releases have followed since, but Mannochmore remains an enigma to many. Destined for blends, including Haig, the distillery is a sizeable producer and has limited support from independent bottlers – some releases have been very suggestive of quality and a need to explore further.
