Following the repeal of Prohibition in Tennessee, Lem Motlow wasted no time in restarting production at the Jack Daniel Distillery. However, with the distillery recovering financially, waiting the traditional four years for Jack Daniel's whiskey to mature was not commercially viable. To bridge the gap, Motlow introduced Lem Motlow's Tennessee Whiskey, a younger expression aged for just 12 months. First released in 1939, production continued until 1942, when it was suspended due to the Second World War. The brand returned to production in 1947 and was originally bottled at 90 proof before being reduced to 80 proof in 1986.
