Killyloch is arguably one of the rarest whiskies when it comes to single malt scotch. It was another example of a distillery that was set up in a grain distillery to produce a single malt for blending purposes. It was rarely seen outside of these blending requirements with only a small number of casks being bottled by independents such as Signatory. Many of these malt distilleries within a grain complex had a short shelf-life. Killyloch was originally called Lillyloch and located in the Garnheath grain plant, near Airdrie. It opened in 1965 and was closed by the early 1970s – Killyloch is so mysterious we don’t know when the stills were decommissioned. It was a lightly peated malt by design and the same stills produced another whisky unicorn in Islebrae, which was a heavily peated malt. Such whiskies are very few and far between and demand is high when they do appear at auction.
