    Lot #0270257

To date there have only ever been two releases of Killyloch malt whisky. This is one of them and is the result of the vatting of the last 6 of the proprietary stock available. Distilled in 1967, matured for 36 years then bottled by Inver House in 2003 at natural cask strength. Limited to only 371 bottles. The whisky has been bottled at natural cask strength and unchill-filtered to allow the genuine characteristics of this stunning malt to be enjoyed. Having started out life as a paper mill, Killyloch was purchased and transformed in 1965 into Moffat Distillery, also home to the Garnheath and Glen Flagler Stills. Killyloch fell silent in the early 70s, however, several casks were set aside and warehoused until they were judged to be at their best for release by the Master Blender. As the QE2 was being launched in Clydebank in 1967 the American Oak Barrels at Moffat Distillery were being filled with Killyloch Single Malt Scotch Whisky, to be warehoused until their best for bottling. Killyloch was originally intended to be named Lillyloch which was the source of the water. The cask stencil received, however, contained a misspelling that was never corrected.

    Killyloch (Moffat)

Killyloch is arguably one of the rarest whiskies when it comes to single malt scotch. It was another example of a distillery that was set up in a grain distillery to produce a single malt for blending purposes. It was rarely seen outside of these blending requirements with only a small number of casks being bottled by independents such as Signatory. Many of these malt distilleries within a grain complex had a short shelf-life. Killyloch was originally called Lillyloch and located in the Garnheath grain plant, near Airdrie. It opened in 1965 and was closed by the early 1970s – Killyloch is so mysterious we don’t know when the stills were decommissioned. It was a lightly peated malt by design and the same stills produced another whisky unicorn in Islebrae, which was a heavily peated malt. Such whiskies are very few and far between and demand is high when they do appear at auction.
