Cambus Fine Island Cognac

Camus has a history of successfully marketing Cognac under "less prestigious" appellations; their Borderies XO is a particular favorite. Branded as "Fine Island Cognac," this is a recently released bottling from the Ile de Re. To be fair, the island off the northwest coast of Cognac is regarded by many as one of the most picturesque places in France. It has sandy soils that drain freely and a maritime climate; it is included in the Bois Ordinaires appellation, also known as "Bois Terroirs." Its vines produce an early cognac that is primarily meant for consumption in the immediate area. It is typically characterized as having "a characteristic local flavour," which some have suggested is just another way of saying "mediocrity." This eaux-de-vie is distilled on the lees to bring out the flavors of the original eaux-de-vie.
