A legendary bottle from the famous Bowmore distillery, Islay. A limited-edition bottle specially produced for the distillery's 200-year Anniversary (Bicentenary) in 1979. A must-have for the Bowmore fanatics. This bottle contains a vatting of the oldest stocks in the Bowmore distillery. Some of it was distilled in 1950, in fact, the vatting contains whisky from 10 different years between 1950 and 1966. Most of it has been matured in fine old sherry casks though some has been drawn from American casks. The bottle bearing the Morrison clan coat of arms is a replica of a hand-blown decanter and was filled at the distillery in early 1979.
Reviews of this whisky are incredibly positive, with Whisky Jug stating "Bowmore Bicentenary is unspeakably good whisky and it’s hard for me to fathom how whisky could taste any better".
Bowmore
If we go by official dates, Bowmore is Islay’s oldest distillery in operation today, kicking off in 1779. Set in a spectacular location, along the coastline from the village of the same name. Bowmore had a mighty reputation founded on some classic whiskies from the 1960s. These have been released in a series of special editions and thankfully the current distillate is excellent. Somehow, Bowmore mixes the peat of Islay with a coastal vibe that is underpinned by a wonderful fruitiness. Shrouded in history, it also arguably has Scotland’s most famous and atmospheric warehouse in the Vault No.1. Stepping into this and walking through the maturing casks, while the ocean crashes against the outer wall, is well worth the price of admission.
