Bladnoch Distillery's The Dragon Series is a collection of five single malts, each crafted to highlight the unpredictable nature of whisky-making and the ongoing tension between science and nature. Every release explores a unique variable in the production process. Iteration III of the Dragon Series delves into another key source of whisky’s variability—cask coopering. This edition highlights how the craft of shaping, preparing, and treating oak can have a profound impact on the character of the final spirit. From the species of oak and the conditions in which it grew, to the intricacies of seasoning, toasting, and charring, each step introduces subtle complexities. Even small variations in technique or timing can trigger a ripple effect—what might seem like controlled craftsmanship quickly becomes a balancing act between nature’s unpredictability and human precision. To showcase this influence, the whisky was matured in a combination of first fill American oak bourbon casks and Spanish oak sherry casks, each contributing distinct layers of character. Bottled at 49.9% ABV, this release pays tribute to the Cooper’s role in shaping whisky’s destiny, demonstrating how the seemingly silent work of oak can echo powerfully through every drop.

    Bladnoch

Somehow, this Lowland distillery continues to defy the odds and survive. Founded in 1817 by Thomas and John McClelland, production lasted until 1905 when the first of several closures ensued. During one such period, shortly after World War 2, the distillery is stripped of its equipment and liquidated. For 20 years, Bladnoch waits on another opportunity before it is refitted and bounces back into life. New owners follow and more closures, until 1994 when the Armstrongs resurrect the distillery until 2014, when Bladnoch is liquidated again. A year later David Prior purchases the distillery with grand ambitions and begins by refurbishing the equipment and launching a more premium styled whisky, and running peat distillation. So far, the future now seems bright for Bladnoch, over 200 years since its foundation.
