Unusually for a Speyside distillery, BenRiach distil whisky from both styles of malted barley, non-peated and peated. Solstice is a limited release 17 year old, which is heavily peated from The BenRiach. The whisky has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels, before being finished in Aged Tawny Port pipes.

Benriach has a chequered history since its foundation in 1898. Sold shortly afterwards, as its owner, John Duff, couldn’t afford to keep it going along with the Longmorn distillery. Things didn’t improve for a considerable period of time; 65 years in fact. As the doors closed at Benriach in 1900 for that period of time. Fortunately, the distillery survived and sprung back into life and was expanded in 1985 with a new set of stills. Good times didn’t last too long as the distillery closed its doors again in 2001, but Billy Walker saw the potential and a substantial inventory. Arguably it was only in the following years that we all began to understand what Benriach could deliver, as did Brown-Forman who purchased the distillery in 2016.
