This BenRiach 18 Years Old Dunder is part of the new heavily peated range. Originally matured in American oak casks, the whisky is then finished in Dark Rum barrels.
This intriguing new Speyside expression, from the same range as the BenRiach Albariza, takes its name from the residue of cane juice left in a still after the distillation of a batch of rum. Traditionally used as a yeast source in the fermentation process of Jamaican rum, it gives the drink a unique aroma and flavour.
BenRiach
Benriach has a chequered history since its foundation in 1898. Sold shortly afterwards, as its owner, John Duff, couldn’t afford to keep it going along with the Longmorn distillery. Things didn’t improve for a considerable period of time; 65 years in fact. As the doors closed at Benriach in 1900 for that period of time. Fortunately, the distillery survived and sprung back into life and was expanded in 1985 with a new set of stills. Good times didn’t last too long as the distillery closed its doors again in 2001, but Billy Walker saw the potential and a substantial inventory. Arguably it was only in the following years that we all began to understand what Benriach could deliver, as did Brown-Forman who purchased the distillery in 2016.
